The difference between pearlescent paint and general paint
2025-05-06

What is the difference between pearlescent paint and general paint? Let's first show you what pearlescent pigment is. Pearlescent pigment is a kind of mica platelet coated with titanium dioxide. Because of its unique flaky structure, it has a good refractive index for light, so it has a gloss effect similar to the surface of pearls. The soft and bright gloss of this paint between soft satin and glitter is very charming and decorative. And when we change the viewing angle, the surface of this paint will also produce a light and dark visual effect, which is far beyond the reach of ordinary color paint. It is this characteristic of pearlescent pigment that makes it have the reputation of "magic color paint" and is deeply loved by consumers.

Do you know what is the difference between pearlescent pigments and ordinary paints?

In fact, the main difference between pearlescent pigments and ordinary paints is that it presents color effects through the optical effect of film light interference. When the color of the light reflected on the film is different, the actual effect is also different, a bit like the colorful halo produced by oil film on water or soap bubbles.

Secondly, it has unique optical properties. When we look at it from different angles, it presents different colors, and can bring a fantastic decorative effect to the coating. If traditional transparent absorption paint and pearlescent pigment are mixed, the decorative effect is more prominent, which is not comparable to ordinary color paint.

There are several common types of pearlescent pigments:

There are several common types of pearlescent pigments:

1. Silver-white series: Its surface gloss is comparable to that of silver-white pearls, and you won't notice the difference if you don't look closely. Therefore, many jewelers use this paint to cover ordinary beads and sell them to consumers as pearls.

2. Rainbow series: Depending on the viewing angle and the angle of light projection, you will see different color changes on this paint, just like a rainbow. The principle is that different reflected light and penetrating color light are formed due to the interference of light.

3. Color series: There are two types of color series. One is to cover the surface of natural mica with a layer of titanium dioxide and then a layer of iron oxide pigment, thus having both the luster of pearl and the color of iron oxide, forming a special color pearlescent paint. The other is to directly cover the surface of natural mica with iron oxide, thus forming a color pearlescent pigment with a metallic tone.
