Application of Chameleon Pearlescent Pigments in Plastics
2025-06-24

With the development of science and technology, the application scope of chameleon pearlescent pigments is getting wider and wider. In the plastics industry, from plastic processing technologies such as injection molding, blow molding, blister molding, casting, masterbatch, to the manufacture of cosmetic containers, shampoo containers, food and medicine containers, hoses, daily plastic products, toys, buttons, sandals, construction plastic products, home plastic decorations, etc., more and more manufacturers are beginning to pay attention to the decorative function of chameleon pearlescent pigments.

Chameleon series pearlescent pigments, also known as angle-differentiated pearlescent pigments, include iron chameleon and titanium chameleon. Through production process control, various oxides with different refractive indices are alternately coated on the mica substrate, and the coating thickness of each oxide is designed. The light is reflected and refracted by the multi-layer film, thus achieving the special effects of different colors of the chameleon series pearlescent pigments at different angles. Products with chameleon pearlescent pigments change color through multiple refractions and interferences of light in the product coating, presenting gradient and flowing colors, reflecting a more technological aesthetic.

There are many ways to color plastic resins with Chameleon Pearlescent Pigments. Resins can be colored directly and liquid-solid, or they can be made into masterbatches and then colored. Alternatively, a wetting agent can be mixed with the resin, and then a dispersant and pearlescent pigments can be added for blending. However, among these coloring methods, the best effect is to make the resin into masterbatches before coloring. It should be noted that the amount of pearlescent pigments in plastics is usually between 0.5% and 2%. If used for the production of films and thin-walled products, the amount can be appropriately increased and controlled at 4%-5%.

When chameleon pearlescent pigments are used in plastics, due to the transparency of the resin, the color of the chameleon pigment material itself also plays a very important role. When used on dark colors, especially black surfaces, a color effect that changes with different viewing angles can be obtained. On the contrary, on white or off-white backgrounds, only a very subtle color change flashing effect will be produced, because the background reflects most of the incident light.
