PEARL PIGMENT AT COSMETIC APPLICATION
2026-03-02

Application of Pearlescent Pigments in Cosmetics

Pearlescent pigments are core raw materials for creating luster, shimmer, iridescence and three-dimensional makeup effects in cosmetics. They are based on mica, synthetic mica or glass coated with metal oxides such as TiO₂ and Fe₂O₃, and produce colors through light interference, reflection and transmission. They are safe, non-toxic, heat-resistant and light-resistant, widely used in color cosmetics, base makeup, nail polish and personal care products.

1. Core Properties and Advantages

· Optical Effects: Silver-white, interference (iridescent), gold, metallic, and color-changing (chameleon) effects, with adjustable luster from satin to high shimmer.

· Safety & Compliance: Heavy metals (Pb/Hg) ≤ 1ppm, complying with FDA, REACH and China’s cosmetic safety standards; mild and low-irritation.

· Formulation Compatibility: Flaky structure for easy dispersion; available in lipophilic or hydrophilic surface treatments, suitable for powders, creams, liquids, oils and all formulations.

· Skin Feel & Performance: Ultra-fine particles for soft-focus and non-caking; large particles for high shimmer; surface treatment improves adhesion, anti-caking and anti-settling.

3. Main Categories and Application Scenarios

1) Base Makeup

· Liquid Foundation / Primer / Tinted Moisturizer: Ultra-fine pearlescence (< 15μm), 1%–5%, for transparency, soft-focus pores and natural finish.

· Pressed Powder / Loose Powder: Fine particles (10–40μm), 1%–10%, to reduce dullness and set makeup.

· Highlighter / Contour: Coarse particles (> 150μm), 20%–30%, for local brightening and 3D contouring.

2) Color Cosmetics

· Eyeshadow: Full particle size range; fine/medium for daily satin and subtle shimmer; coarse for glitter toppers; interference/chameleon for iridescent effects.

· Blush: Ultra-fine/fine particles, 5%–20%, for soft, luminous complexion.

· Lips (Lipstick / Lip Gloss / Lip Tint): Medium particles, 1%–10%, for pearlescent translucent color; coarse for special glitter effects.

· Nail Polish: Medium particles, 1%–10%, for pearlescent, iridescent and metallic finishes, anti-settling.

3) Personal Care

· Shower Gel / Shampoo / Body Lotion: Uniformly suspended pearlescent flakes for silky luster and enhanced texture.

· Sunscreen / Lip Balm: Low addition (0.5%–2%), for natural shine without affecting efficacy.

4. Main Types and Effects

· Silver-white Pearlescence: Basic type, transparent brightening, used in base makeup, nail polish, lip gloss.

· Interference (Iridescent): Color shifts with angle (red/yellow/blue/purple), for eyeshadow, highlighter, nail polish.

· Gold / Metallic: Satin gold, bronze, copper, for luxurious metallic makeup.

· Chameleon: Multi-color shifting, for premium eyeshadow and highlighter.

· Colored Pearlescence: Combined pearlescence and solid color, dual-tone dynamic effect for eyeshadow and lip products.

5. Key Formulation Points

1. Particle Size Matching: Fine particles for powders to avoid flying; medium for liquids/oils to prevent settling; coarse for highlighters.

2. Surface Treatment: Lipophilic for oil phases (lipstick, nail polish); hydrophilic for water phases (foundation, shower gel).

3. Dosage Control: Low addition for base makeup (0.5%–5%); high for color cosmetics (5%–50%); very high for highlighters.

4. Dispersion & Stability: Increase viscosity in liquids/oils to prevent settling; optimize oil absorption in powders to avoid caking.

6. Safety & Compliance

· Only cosmetic-grade pearlescent pigments are allowed, with heavy metals ≤ 1ppm, asbestos-free and non-hazardous impurities.

· Comply with China Safety Technical Code for Cosmetics, FDA 21 CFR, EU REACH and other standards.

· Synthetic mica / glass substrates are preferred for higher purity and stability.
